Archer bade farewell to the late Jessica Walter in an emotional scene from the last episode of Season 12. Spoilers ahead.
Walter voiced Archer’s mother, Malory, on the show, and this episode saw her come to the rescue of her son. Then, at the end of the episode, Archer finds a farewell letter from his mother. “With all the chaos and confusion of recent times,” the letter said, “I thought it would be wise to make my own exit.” She says “wherever I am, I’ll watch you.” We then see Malory and her husband Ron (who was voiced by Walter’s husband Ron Leibman, who died in 2019) on a beach watching the sunset.
To finish the scene, we had to dig into the archives of the series. “We put together Jessica and Ron lines from each season of Archer and combed them through, picking out the ones that we thought would promote the feeling we were trying to conjure,” said executive producer Casey Willis. at TVLine. “Next to [creator] Adam Reed, we have worked to create a tribute to our beloved Malory. “
Along with Archer, Walters was probably best known for her role as Lucille Bluth in Arrested Development, for which she won an Emmy nomination. The actor was also nominated for an Emmy for his work as Malory during the 2021 ceremony.
“If we are lucky enough to have a season 13, we have some ideas on how we want to proceed with [Malory’s absense]”Willis told Collider in August. “We’re talking about how the characters are going to react and how we even want to portray him. So I don’t want to talk too much about it, because I don’t want to curse season 13… I think we found some good ones. ideas on how to handle it. “
