School districts are quarantining students and staff, based on their exposure to COVID-19.
On August 5, the Ohio Department of Health released quarantine guidelines for those who have been exposed to COVID-19 in a school setting or on school bus. Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 must follow isolation procedures.
“Developing guidelines that will allow well-protected students to stay in class as much as possible – even if there has been exposure to COVID-19 – helps facilitate this important in-person learning this year,” Ohio Department of Chief Medical Officer of Health Bruce Vanderhoff said in a press release.
What are the quarantine guidelines for those who have been exposed to COVID-19?
Quarantine is not necessary for those who are fully vaccinated, but they are advised to wear a mask indoors for 14 days or until they test negative, according to the state’s health department.
Students and adults who are not fully vaccinated do not have to self-quarantine if the exposed person wore a face mask consistently and correctly and the physical distance was maintained, according to the health department.
Quarantine is also not necessary for people exposed to COVID-19 in K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status if masks were worn there was at least 3 feet of physical distance and there There are documented COVID-19 prevention policies, according to the state health department.
People should go into quarantine if the student of the exposed staff member is not fully immunized and there were no masks or physical distancing. The Ohio Department of Health recommends that the exposed person self-quarantine for at least seven days since the last exposure and get tested on or after day 5.
The state health department has also established a flowchart for determining quarantine guidelines for class K-12 parameters.
