Obaseki Signs Edo State Elderly Policy – ​​Nigerian Observer


The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has signed the Edo State Elderly Policy, which will prioritize better welfare for the elderly in the state.

Addressing seniors at an event held at the Baptist Convention Ground in Benin City, to mark National Day of Older Persons 2022, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs of Edo State, Ms. Ifueko Alufohai, said the celebration highlights the impact of aging population in society.

The event included physical exercises and medical screening for the elderly organized by the state government.

She said, “The Edo State Elderly Policy has been approved by Mr. Governor with a directive that arrangements should be put in place immediately to ensure its smooth implementation.

“We are happy to report that this directive is being followed and with the support of our partners, we are sure that its implementation is in sight. We look forward to other occasions to celebrate the start of the implementation of the state policy for the elderly.

According to her, “The commemoration of National Day of Older Persons aims to highlight the impact of the aging population on our society. It aims to engage critical stakeholders on the need to ensure that people can age with dignity, while raising awareness of issues affecting older people, which is key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. of “leaving no one behind”.

She noted that the event “aims to celebrate and honor the contributions these seniors have made to society over the years. Although they may seem to need our help and care at this point in their lives.

“We recognize their immense contribution to our collective development as individuals, families, businesses, systems and institutions. It is their sacrifice that now builds together,” she added.

The Permanent Secretary reiterated the State Government’s commitment to improving the well-being of older people, noting, “Our commitments to the well-being of older people have propelled our actions to ensure that we have a framework legal system that meets the diverse needs of seniors.
