Resources for Educators and Families for Mental Health Awareness Month from Discovery Education and Social Impact Partners


Silver Spring, MD (Friday, May 6, 2022) – In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month 2022, observed annually in May, Discovery Education and its partners are proud to present educators, students and families with a wide range of dynamic digital resources supporting mental health students from all over the world.

Centered around the theme “Together for Mental Health” this year, Mental Health Awareness Month supports all forms of mental well-being. The following resources created in collaboration with social impact partners support student well-being through empowering families and educators:

Professional development content
Deepen educators’ capacity around social-emotional learning (SEL) and its diverse applications in a variety of learning environments with professional learning resources from the Social-Emotional Learning Coalitiona network of partners committed to bringing critical and culturally relevant socio-emotional learning resources into basic education to support educators and students nationwide.

Foster a teaching strategy centered on SEL with on-demand e-learning modules designed to build understanding of trauma-informed educational practices and policies that promote a student-centered learning environment from On your marks, get set, GET UP! – a unique educational initiative that improves teacher performance and student achievement through better stress management skills and overall social-emotional learning from Kaiser Permanente, Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Healthier Generation) and Discovery Education .

Family resources Families play a vital role in the well-being of children. With Resources from amazing me an initiative of the Dove Self-Esteem Project and Discovery Education – parents and caregivers can take an active role in the social-emotional learning, health and confidence building of students at critical developmental ages.

Class activities
Empowering students to raise their voices for social change through the fourth edition Louder Than Hate Challenge. Students ages 13-18 can win $6,000 for submitting a project demonstrating how speaking out can create a community stronger than hate. Submissions are due May 26. the Louder Than Hate Challenge demonstrates the power of learning from the past and speaking out against hate. The challenge is presented by the USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education, the global edtech leader whose cutting-edge digital platform supports learning wherever it takes place.

Users of Discovery Education’s K-12 platform can experience all of this content and more in the SEL Center located in the Discovery Education K-12 Learning Platform. Created by the SEL Coalition, the Center for Social-Emotional Learning features a curated collection of hundreds of resources designed to help educators integrate SEL into basic instruction and help students develop social and emotional skills. The SEL Center includes resources focused on educator professional development and school culture, including micro-learnings, instructional strategies, and ready-to-use slideshows. Designed for all K-12 students and educators, the center offers multimodal digital content for students aligned with the five SEL competencies of Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and includes virtual outings in the field, videos and podcasts. , mindfulness exercises, songs and reading passages.

The SEL Center is made possible in part through partnerships with The Allstate Foundation, the National AfterSchool Association, and Ask, Listen, Learn. SEL Center resources include original resources from Discovery Education, content from trusted partners like CASEL, Inner Explorer, and Everyday Speech, and content created in partnership with The Allstate Foundation and Ask, Listen, Learn.

“The Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention reports that 37% of young people have poor mental health since 2020,” said Beth Meyer, vice president of social impact at Discovery Education. “These data indicate that we are currently at a tipping point in K-12 education when it comes to the challenge of student mental well-being. Partnerships for the creation of resources supporting student mental wellbeing – like those featured here – are more important than ever, and we all have a role to play in supporting this important work.
